Research into existing student-made short films

In order to come up with my own short film concept I will first watch and evaluate some student made short films so that I can analyse them. This will help me as I can see what works and what doesn't and how the most effective ones are arranged.

Coda
Coda is a short film written, directed and animated by Alan Holly. It is simply described as "A lost soul stumbles drunken through the city. In a park, Death finds him and shows him many things."in this film you see a drunk man stumble into the road and get hit by a car. His spirit then leaves his body and runs away through the city. Death arrives and looks for him, eventually finding him in a park. The man doesn't want to go and demands that death shows him things for the last time before he goes. Death complies and the man goes on a journey feeling all the things he wished he felt whilst alive. This film has such a beautiful message and teaches you to enjoy life whilst you can and take nothing for granted. This film is greatly inspiring to me as although it is animated and visually is very different to what I am going to create I love the gentle and peaceful, almost otherworldly feel to it and am so inspired by the powerful message behind it.

Smell the Roses

Smell the Roses is a short film about a future world obsessed with social media. It focuses in on a boy whilst he goes about his day to day life. We see him doing things such as laying in bed or eating breakfast all whilst scrolling or posting on social media. He never even takes his eyes off the screen. Suddenly his feed is flooded with the message 'go outside and smell the roses'. Taken aback by this, the boy finally logs off and goes outside. We then see all the people on his street do the same thing. I like this film as it has a very important message behind it. We have to be careful and have a healthy balance between social media and real life otherwise this film will in fact be our future. This film is very stylish and smooth and has some amazing editing techniques. Although I think that the only downside is the scenes of the boy scrolling through his feed does get a little bit repetitive and boring it is beautifully done and the message at the end is conveyed well leaving your mind racing.
